Corn Cob Regatta - Ahoy Mate!
An Official Sanctioned Event of the
American Canoe Association

Experience Estherville's hospitality and the beauty of Iowa by participating in this fun family float.

The first annual Corn Cob Regatta will be held at North Riverside Park with registrations starting at high noon on Sunday August 6, 2006 in association with Estherville's Sweet Corn Days. North Riverside Park is found on the north side of the river in Estherville!! If you really did need these instructions please bring a map with you so you can identify which direction is downstream!

A regatta is a boat race but we do not care if you race or not.  Please join the regatta race or just have a fun float down the tranquil and beautiful West Fork of the Des Moines River.  If you wish to race then by all means may the best boats win!

Prizes will be awarded. The prizes will be for best time kayak, best time canoe and best corn accessorized boat. Each boat must have something corn related  on board at the finish to be eligible for a prize!

The corn related accessories might include corn cob hats, seed corn hats, corn decorated boats, or whatever else you can imagine - all in good taste - RIGHT?

As of July 30 the river is navigable. The course will benefit the paddlers who can read the water flow and pick the path of the channel. Water flow is slow and using a single kayak leisurely paddling along the trip took 80 minutes. You are sure to see plenty of wildlife along the trip including blue heron's wood ducks and many song birds.

Rules

  • A life vest must be worn by all participants
  • All participants under 14 must be accompanied by an adult
  • No alcoholic beverages while on the water
  • All participants will be required to sign an American Canoe Association  release of liability waiver at the time of registration
  • All participants must bring home all cans/trash they find or start the journey with
  • Good citizenship is expected of all participants. This includes stopping to aid people who need assistance.

Route

The starting point for the race will be from the Tom and Jerry Bridge. You can use the Fourth Street access on your own if you just want to float on a tube or if you do not want to work at paddling your boat. You can pick your own voyage. You will be assisted in and out of the official start and ending point by the finely trained crews of the Estherville Corn Cob Coast Guard. Look for assistance from the folks in the Gold shirts!
